Dreams are a powerful tool in developing deep insight about yourself and your life purpose. They are a priceless source of inspiration and creativity, as witnessed by geniuses spanning the entire range between Einstein and Salvador Dali; both of whom worked with dream and fantasy in their work.

In sleep, your spirit is unbound and you touch the subtle realms beyond waking reality. This is the place where the highest part of your consciousness, your Higher Self, can communicate directly to you. The language of this communication is the language of symbol and metaphor.

Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. The following simple 3-step process will enable you to work with your dreams to gain deeper insights into your psyche:

(1) Make a written declaration before you sleep.

Say, or better still, write down a statement such as "I want to remember my dreams in order to receive valuable guidance". If you are already able to remember and capture your dreams, modify this question to "Which direction should I go in life?" or "Should I take that job?" or whatever.

Put the declaration under your pillow before you go to sleep.

(2) Perform stretching exercises before you get into bed.

If you can touch your toes, then do so. At any rate, gently stretch your body so that it is relaxed and flexible. Once you are in bed and ready to sleep, you can also relax your body further. Tense and release each of your muscle groups in turn, beginning with your legs, and gradually working all the way up your body to your face. Take several deep breaths, and feel yourself relax more with each breath.

The fact is that much of our sleep time is spent de-stressing the body, which is why people often do not sleep that well. Much of this de-stressing can be done before you ever drop off.

The seasons have nothing to do with how far the Earth is from the Sun. If this were the case, it would be hotter in the northern hemisphere during January as opposed to July. Instead, the seasons are caused by the Earth being tilted on its axis by an average of 23.5 degrees (Earth's tilt on its axis actually varies from near 22 degrees to 24.5 degrees).

Words Which Build Barriers                           (Continued from Page 12)
Other words can limit our ability to grow. "I'll never be able to do anything like that" is one of the more powerful limitations. Alternate versions include "I would never want to do that" and "I will always be this way."

The "never" and "always" words should be regarded with extreme caution, as should the "should" word. There surely are things that you will never or always do, but these choices are least limiting when they're made consciously and deliberately.
Also notice a variation of this, which is "If X happens I'm going to be really upset." That's planning for trouble.
What we tell ourselves is very important. What we tell others may be even more so, as it is somewhat more difficult to "take back one's words" when the principle of exaggeration is unleashed into action.
Have you ever told someone that you're furious at them when you're only annoyed? Have you emphasized how much they hurt you? Have you ever said you could never forgive them?
I have; of course, it was only to get their attention and make a point, but sometimes the point made a wound.

The Ecology of Language
Once I decided to modify my methods of self-expression my first step was to simply pay attention. I listened to how I thought and spoke. I caught myself in some pretty big exaggerations.
Then I came to the tricky part. Some schools of self-improvement urge instant behavior modification. Just don't say those words any more. Stop thinking those thoughts.
I don't like to say that this approach is wrong (or that I would never use it), but I prefer to to accept that I have a tendency to veer towards emotional extremism, and to find non-destructive ways to allow this tendency to express itself until it wears itself out. Resisting it seems only to make it become even more extreme.
This does not mean that I allow it full play when I'm speaking to other people, especially about how I feel about them. I handle things before they reach the conversational level.
Some of the methods I've learned and practice include:

  • Working in partnership with others so that we can point out to each other when we are exaggerating. (Note: it's more helpful when such pointing out is done NICELY).
  • Making it a habit to listen to what I am saying/thinking, and laughing at myself.
  • Writing down my thoughts and feelings without censorship in the morning. This is the practice of morning pages, which I wrote about in Get Up and Release.
  • Meditating (or sitting down quietly without distracting myself) and allowing the words to run through my mind until I can get to the emotions which are fueling them.

Once I've gotten to the emotions I allow them to run until I reach the feeling level, a stage which in my definition of the word means being beyond words.
